Boiled Linseed Oil

Caring for boiled linseed oil (BLO) finished wood involves regular, light cleaning and periodic re-oiling to maintain its water resistance and sheen, using a soft cloth with a wood oil or a mild cleaner like vinegar/water (avoid harsh soaps) and always wiping off excess oil immediately. Key safety steps include laying oily rags flat to dry completely to prevent spontaneous combustion and allowing ample time (days to weeks) for the oil to fully cure, not just dry to the touch. Always follow product label instructions.

Daily/Regular Care

  • Dust & Wipe: Gently dust with a soft, dry cloth.

  • Spot Clean: For minor spots, use a damp cloth with a little mild soap (like Murphy's Oil Soap sparingly) or just a vinegar/water mix, then dry thoroughly.

Periodic Re-oiling (Every Few Months/Year)

  1. Clean First: Remove any dirt or residue with a lint-free cloth and a wood cleaner or mineral spirits (test first).

  2. Apply Oil: Apply a very thin, even coat of BLO with a lint-free cloth, working in the direction of the grain.

  3. Wipe Excess: Let it soak in for 10-20 minutes, then thoroughly wipe off all excess oil to prevent a gummy film.

  4. Buff & Cure: Lightly buff with 0000 steel wool between coats, then let it cure (dry) for 12-24 hours or more before handling.

  5. Always follow instructions on product label for cleanup.
