Butcher Block
Mineral Oils
Caring for mineral oil-finished wood involves regular oiling (daily for the first week, then weekly/monthly) with food-grade mineral oil, wiping up excess, and cleaning with mild soap and water after use, avoiding harsh chemicals or dishwashers; the oil keeps wood hydrated, preventing cracks, while conditioning with beeswax blends adds extra protection and a nice finish. Always follow the manufacturer’s label for application and cleanup.
Your board has already been through the initial saturation process and seasoned with food grade mineral oil and wax.
Routine Oiling (The Core Care)
Initial Saturation: Apply a generous amount of food-grade mineral oil to all surfaces (top, sides, ends) and let it soak in, ideally overnight, wiping off any excess the next day.
Ongoing Maintenance:
First Month: Oil daily for the first week, then weekly for the next few weeks.
After First Month: Apply monthly, or more often if the wood looks dry, lighter, or water soaks in quickly.
Application: Rub oil in with a cloth or hands, let it sit (15 mins to overnight), then wipe off the excess.
Always follow the manufacturer’s label for application and cleanup.
Cleaning & Daily Use
After Each Use: Wash with mild dish soap and warm water, gently scrub (a Scotch-Brite pad works), rinse, and immediately dry thoroughly with a towel.
Avoid: Dishwashers, bleach, and harsh chemical cleaners.
For Stains: Sprinkle baking soda, squeeze lemon juice over it, let it sit, then rinse and re-oil.
Always follow the manufacturer’s label for application and cleanup.
Conditioning (Optional but Recommended)
After oiling, use a butcher block conditioner (mineral oil and beeswax blend) to add a protective layer. Rub it in, let it dry, and buff.
Always follow the manufacturer’s label for application and cleanup.
Tips for Longevity
Keep it Moisturized: Oil helps wood maintain moisture, preventing shrinking, expanding, and cracking.
Check the Climate: Hot, dry conditions require more frequent oiling.
Always follow the manufacturer’s label for application and cleanup.
What to Avoid
Oils & Waxes: Do NOT use oil-based soaps (like Murphy's Oil Soap) or silicone-based cleaners; they can damage the finish and prevent future repairs.
Harsh Cleaners: Avoid bleach, ammonia, or other strong chemicals.
Excess Water: Do not submerge into water or use dishwasher for this product.
Always follow the manufacturer’s label for application and cleanup.
